Pura（プーラ）先生の「『歩く木』マングローブ」レポート
こんにちは。hanasoスタッフのＫＯＫＯです！
本日は、hanaso講師の英文レポートをご紹介します。
今回のレポートを書いて頂いた先生は、Pura（プーラ）先生です。
Pura先生、起業家としてもフィリピンで活躍されているようですが、
今回のような環境保全的な活動も行っているようですね。
幅広く活動されていて、驚くばかりです。

MANGROVES “WALKING TREES” ～「歩く木」マングローブ～
Mangroves are evergreen trees that live in tropical coastal environment.
They have tangled roots, which have earned them the title “Walking Trees”. Mangroves appear to be standing or walking on the surface of the water.

マングローブは熱帯地方の沿岸環境で育つ常緑樹です。
絡みつくように育つ根から「歩く木」と呼ばれています。
マングローブは水面に立っているようにも歩いているようにも見えます。
Many mangrove areas along the Philippine coasts are severely damaged or have completely disappeared. Mangrove forests are very important.
They serve as a “wall” between the land and sea to protect the shoreline against erosion, damaging storms, winds and waves. They provide a home for fish, animal species and sea life.
They also provide source of livelihood for people living in the tropical areas.

フィリピンの沿岸にある多くのマングローブはひどく損傷しているか、完全に消えてしまいました。マングローブの森はとても重要です。
マングローブは海岸線の侵食や嵐、風、そして波から保護するための陸と海の間の「壁」として役割を果たしています。そして魚や動物、海洋生物の住処になっています。
また、マングローブは熱帯地域に住む人々の生活の源にもなっています。

私は、マングローブの保全と復元を目的とするプロジェクトに参加しました。
このプロジェクトはIloilo（イロイロ州）のAjuy（アフィ）にあるPadeba（パデバ）という町で行われています。
ここには、樹齢100年のマングローブがあります。
そこは自然愛好家や芸術家、写真家にとって神聖な場所となっています。

The century-old mangroves will eventually die, so that new mangroves should be planted to take their place.
樹齢100年のマングローブはいずれ枯れてしまうので、そこには新しいマングローブが植えられている必要があります。

It was a wonderful feeling to walk by the footpath and enjoy the breathtaking sight of mangrove trees.
歩道を歩き、マングローブの息を呑むような景色を楽しんだことで、とても素晴らしい気分になりました。
Let’s protect the mangroves. They play a very important role in the conservation of the environment.
さあ、マングローブを保護しましょう。マングローブは環境保全にとても重要な役割を果たしています。
マングローブは、二酸化炭素の吸収力が非常に強い植物であり、同時に生態系の保全に非常な役割を果たすようですね。
フィリピンでは政策としてマングローブの保全に取り組んでいて、様々なプロジェクトが実施されているようです。
ＫＯＫＯはマングローブがそんなに重要な植物だとは知りませんでした。
